Houses, not high-rises

Most of Staten Island is houses: colonials and capes, split-levels, newer townhouses, and waterfront homes on the South Shore and along the Kill Van Kull. That means more rooms with windows on several sides, sliding doors to decks and yards, bay windows, and two-story entries and family rooms.

Why drapery matters here

Big windows and sliding doors. Family rooms and kitchens often open to decks through wide sliders. Drapery on a smooth track covers the whole opening and slides fully clear when you want to step outside.

Two-story rooms. Windows high above the floor in entries and great rooms are the classic case for motorized shades or drapery: you can’t reach them by hand.

Waterfront sun and salt air. Homes near the water get strong reflected light. Solar sheers cut glare, and we suggest fabrics that hold up to sun.

Bedrooms for early risers and late sleepers. Blackout lining and side returns block morning light.

When motorized makes sense

High windows, wide sliders and rooms where every window should open at once. Set them on a schedule so the house opens in the morning and closes at sunset.
